Collaboration between Renovables y Desarrollos del Sureste and Naturgy for the creation of two solar plants.

Naturgy, in collaboration with RDS, began yesterday the construction of the first two photovoltaic plants of the company in Andalusia, Tabernas I and Tabernas II, with a capacity of 50 MWp each. The investment will be more than 52 million euros.

Clean energy and jobs for local people

The plants will produce more than 228 GWh per year of energy, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 65,400 homes and will help reduce more than 145,200 tonnes of CO2 per yea Both projects will generate more than 700 direct and indirect jobs, the company said in a statement, during the construction, installation and maintenance phases. In addition, with these two new facilities, Naturgy will exceed 131 MW of renewable installed capacity in Andalusia.

The Director General of Energy of the Junta de Andalucía, Manuel Larrasa, and the Mayor of Tabernas, José Diaz, together with the Head of Project Development of Naturgy, Juan Ferrero, the Director of Operations of Naturgy, Jesus San Emeterio, and the delegate of Development in Naturgy, Jesús Varela, have laid the first stone of the two photovoltaic plants.

Commitment to Andalusia and the environment

Larrasa stressed the Junta de Andalucía’s “full willingness” to develop all renewable energy generation projects within the framework of the Andalusian Energy Strategy currently being drawn up, as well as the Andalusian Climate Action Plan approved on 13 October.

“This region is going to become a leader in renewable energy production in the coming years. All the projects that are being implemented go through strict environmental requirements, but we also demand the generation of local employment and a series of commitments with this environment, with heritage and training so that we continue to move forward,” said the mayor of Tabernas.

For his part, the head of Project Development of the company Naturgy has indicated that for the company both projects “reinforce the commitment to Andalusia” and “demonstrate the strong commitment of the company for the increase in renewable generation, contemplated in our Strategic Plan 2021-2025”.

In addition, the Tabernas I and Tabernas II projects have been carefully integrated into the local landscape and ecosystem. Thus, they have reforested certain plots of land, built insect shelters, feeding and drinking troughs for wildlife, and taken other environmental measures to favour the habitat of certain native species.

As part of its philosophy of promoting the economic and social development of all those areas in which it operates, Naturgy has subcontracted several companies for the construction of these two plants; among them, RDS as the engineering developer of the projects in question.
